Metabolomic studies involve the analysis of complex matrices comprised of diverse compounds with different physiochemical properties. Deconvolving these complex mixes of compounds requires instrumentation with the ability to accurately, precisely and robustly measure analytes of interest. MS technologies demonstrating high mass resolution have previously been shown to be beneficial for metabolite identification, however, mass resolution can be compromised with an increase in acquisition speed. Here, we highlight the benefits provided by the Xevo MRT (multi- reflecting time-of-flight) MS for metabolomic/lipidomic analyses that provide high mass resolution and mass accuracy (sub ppm) for confident compound identification. The applicability of these attributes is also shown for high- throughput chromatographic separations (i.e., large cohort studies), with mass resolution and mass accuracy being maintained when utilizing high data acquisition rates.
